61st Anniversary of Liberation

From Camp Susupe

In June, 1944, during the first days of the battle for Saipan, chaos reigned. Civilians poured down from the caves where they had been hiding, with only the clothes on their back. Many of the Chamorros and Carolinian clutched crucifixes to distinguish themselves from the Japanese.

The U.S. Marines and soldiers did not know what to do with these frightened, desperate people. Never before had they encountered so many civilians as they battled their way across the Pacific. Read More...
